Edgar Gould was born in 1889 in Barnham ( Thetford Q4-1889 4B:367), son of George and Emily GOULD (née CLARKE).
1891 census...Aged 1, he was at Edward's Cottages, Duke's Ride, Barnham with his father George GOULD [30] farm labourer, born Honington; his mother Emily [30] born Chevington; brother Herbert [4] born Sapiston and uncle William G.CLARKE, farm labourer born Chevington. 1901 census...Aged 11, he was at West Farm Cottages, Barnham with his parents; uncle William CLARKE, brother Fred (Herbert), a farm labourer and brother Sidney [8] born Barnham. 1911 census...Aged 21, a horse keeper, he was still at West Farm with his parents( his father now recorded as born in Sapiston)
The pension card has his father still at West Farm, Banham and also records and illegitimate child, Miss Louisa VINCENT at Black Dyke, Hockwold.

He enlisted in Norwich on 1st August 1914 in the 13th Reserves, Dragoons of Line for 3 years, giving his age as 25 years 38 days, born Barnham, a horseman.
He was 5 feet 7.5 inches (171.5 cm) tall, weighing 106 lbs (48.2 kg), 36" to 38" (91.4 to 96.5 cm), blue eyes, brown hair, Church of England. He was transferred to 2nd Reserves on 10th November 1914 and to the 3rd West Riding Regiment on 15th June 1915, then to the 8th Battalion, West Riding on 7th September 1915. On 7th September 1915 he was posted to the Mediterranean theatre. Apparently admitted to 19 Stationary hospital, Imbros, Crete with influenza in Christmas Day 1915, then Cottonera Hospital, Malta on 15th January 1916 with sciatica. released to Mellieha Camp on 1st February and to active service via HT "Invernia" on 15th February, joining his unit at El Ferdan on 28th March 1916. He sailed from Alexandria on 25th June 1916 , arriving Marseilles on 3rd July. Reported wounded and missing, believed killed, on 14th September 1916. His Army documents give his family as father George and mother Emily at West Farm Barnham, and brother William Gould address unknown (presumably in Army). When his father completed the "living family" form in 1919 he gave father George Gould at West Farm, Barnham, and brother Herbert Fred Gould 32, living in Euston. No death of his mother or brother Sidney during that time has been found. The battalion war diary has :- 14th... at 57d.w.3.a. (Martinsart)Battalion in Brigade Reserve..battalion practising the attack 8 am Battalion moved off and relieved the 6th York and Lancaster Regt. map ref 57D.R.31.b.5.2. 6:30 pm "X" and "Z" Coys made an attack on enemy trenches, objective R.31.d.9.8. (Wunder Werk) and R.31.b.33.(Hohenzollern Trench). "W" Coy in Support, "Y" Coy in Batt Reserve. 6:40 pm Objective reached. Attacking companies advanced 40 yards beyond and dug themselves in. Communication trench to new position dug immediately. 15th...Battalion holding newly captured positions. Counter attacks repulsed with heavy losses to the enemy.. The attack a complete success. Our losses, killed and wounded 8 officers and 250 O.R." CWGC have a total of 54, all ranks, killed. The Bury Free Press of 11th November 1916 reported:- BARNHAM MAN MISSING Sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. George Gould, West Farm, Barnham, who are very anxious about their son, Prvt Edgar Gould, 8th Suffolk Regiment. The parents were recipients of an official notification on September 14th last, stating that he had been wounded in his right foot.Nothing further since that date has been heard of the young soldier. The parents will be grateful to any comrade or other person who can give them any information of their son.
